Keith Darrell Tonks, 92, died on Nov. 23, 2016, at home at Avamere at Newberg assisted living of natural causes. He was born in Ogden, Utah, to Claude and Gladys Tonks on Feb. 19, 1924
Preceding Keith in death were sisters Phyllis and Colleen and brother Jack. Wife Ruth passed away in 1990. His longtime companion Maxine Miller also preceded him in death in 2006. And son Larry passed away in 2011.
Keith married Ruth Peggy Johnson on Dec. 2, 1943 in Ogden,Utah. They had a daughter Kathy Anne and son Larry Keith.
He leaves behind daughter Kathy Carino (husband Ron); granddaughters Kim Austin Poston (husband Jack), Keri Austin, and Tiffany Tonks Block (husband Greg); and grandson Troy Tonks (wife Goy); 6 great-grandchildren (Cody, Kianna, Alex, Abigail, Emma, and Madi).
Keith served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the Pacific theater. After the war Keith and family moved from Ogden to Portland where he worked in various positions with Albers Milling and Western Auto. In the 1980s Keith and Ruth opened and operated Abbey Carpets in Portland. After selling Abbey Carpets, they opened their own floor covering store, Carpet World.
Keith’s lifelong passion was golf. He was a member at Willamette Valley Country Club and took numerous golfing vacations to Hawaii.
Interment is at Finley-Sunset Hills Memorial. No funeral is planned.
